In addition to the usual training calendar for Anthias Consulting, a WEConnect International certified women's business enterprise, two week-long practical HPLC & LC/MS workshops were run recently at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) in Kenya, in collaboration with the Royal Society of Chemistry Pan Africa Chemistry Network (PACN) and the Recycling Organisation for Research Opportunities (RORO) charity.

The presentations were delivered by Professor Anthony Gachanja from JKUAT and Dr Giles Edwards from Anthias Consulting and, in between lectures, the delegates performed practicals using the HPLC and LC-MS/MS instrumentation that had been donated by RORO the year before.

The practical sessions involved direct infusion experiments, quantitation of caffeine in Kenyan tea, flow injection analysis, HPLC method development.

Almost 50 participants attended from Kenya, Morocco, Zambia, Tanzania, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Ghana, Nigeria, Cameroon, Mauritius, Namibia, Rwanda and Uganda.

The workshop highlights outlined by some of the participants included the maintenance and troubleshooting exercises which provided an invaluable learning experience.

The RSC PACN GC-MS and LC-MS workshops are part of an ongoing training programme, in partnership with GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), to increase analytical chemistry skills across Africa.
